 Staff Sergeant John L. Walker Jr.

 Staff Sergeant Walker was born on 25 August 1983 in Richmond, Virginia. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 28 March 2005. He attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. After graduating recruit training he attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Following completion of MCT he attended his Military Occupational School (MOS) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for Basic Motor Vehicle Operator (3531).

In October 2005, Staff Sergeant Walker received orders to 3rd Marine Division, Combat Assault Battalion, Okinawa, Japan, where he severed as a Logistic Vehicle System operator. In February 2006, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. In April 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

In September 2007, Staff Sergeant Walker received attachment orders to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment as the platoon sergeant for motor transport platoon. In January 2008, he deployed to Iraq with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In April 2008, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. During his deployment he served as a squad leader, Platoon Sergeant, Vehicle Commander, Assistant Convoy Commander, and a Convoy Commander. Upon completion of his tour Iraq, Sergeant Walker returns to 3rd Marine Division, Combat Assault Battalion, Okinawa, Japan, as the Motor Transport Platoon Sergeant.

In February 2009, Staff Sergeant Walker deployed to Afghanistan with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He served as the Motor Transport Platoon Sergeant, Vehicle Commander, and Assistant Convoy Commander. Upon completion of his tour to Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Walker returned to Combat Assault Battalion as the Motor Transport Platoon Sergeant.

In October 2010, Staff  Sergeant Walker received orders to 11th Marine Regiment, Headquarters Battery 1st Marine Division as the truck master/Platoon Sergeant.

In July 2012, Staff Sergeant Walker received orders to Drill Instructor School, Class 4-12, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Upon completion of Drill Instructor school he was assigned to Company A, First Recruit Training Battalion where he currently serves as a Senior Drill Instructor.

In July 2014, Staff Sergeant Walker won Battalion and Regimental Senior Drill Instructor of the quarter (2nd Quarter).

In September 2014, Staff Sergeant Walker won West Coast Drill Instructor of the Year. In October 2014, Staff Sergeant Walker was promoted to his current rank.

Staff  Sergeant Walker’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal with two bronze star in lieu of third award. Staff  Sergeant Walker is married to the former Aya Yonashiro and has two children: Akeem, Nicolas.
