The Padres take the series but not the sweep, losing to the Reds 7-3 in a day game at Petco Park Wednesday.
James Shields took the mound and had a bit of a roller-coaster outing, giving up five earned runs and six hits over six-and-a-thirds innings. Location seemed to be a problem early for Shields, but he settled in after the first inning. With the score tied 3-3 in the third, Shields gave up the go-ahead run on a balk when he faked a pick-off to third base.
Here are some quotables from today’s game:
The balk was a miscommunication. Player-to-player miscommunication. He thought Solarte had the sign, and obviously that didn’t happen.
The first hit was a bloop single to left. Gave up a couple hits, made a mistake. Other than that I got to do my job and go as deep as I can and keep the team in the game, and it didn’t work out.
The Padres have an off day Thursday before heading to Colorado for a three-game set against the Rockies. The team sits fourth in the NL West, at 54-61, and eleven games back in the Wild Card race.
At the trade deadline, the team moved left handed pitcher Marc Rzepczynski to San Diego. Watch as he talks about being closer to home and how he’s acclimating to a new team:
