Chargers TE Antonio Gates is back and you can thank Shannon Sharpe for motivating him; plus, practice news

Antonio Gates returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since serving his four-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. After practice, he spoke to the media about how the experience affected him, and why former Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe gave him some added motivation. Hear from Gates himself in this video:

**NOTES AND QUOTES**

Antonio Gates on his return:
“I was nervous driving back in because you just never know what to expect once you’ve disappeared for four weeks and try to come back.”

On his first practice back:

“It’s very hard to duplicate practice. It’s very hard to duplicate the moves and cuts that you do on a football field. But I said if I was going to make a mistake I was going to do it full go.”

Head coach Mike McCoy on Gates’ return:
“Obviously it’s great to have a player like Antonio Gates back. It looked like the old Antonio Gates running around out there.

“You can’t replace Antonio Gates. He’s one of the best of all time. I just think it’s great to see him back out there. The way he works and conditions every day, the way he runs his route with technique, it’s a great example for our football team how we want to work and do things.”

Gates said catching passes from quarterback Philip Rivers was like “riding a bike.”

“It’s like when you stop riding a bike for a long time, and then start riding again. You understand postures and where to stand. He understands how to read me better than anybody. It’s fun to be out there laughing and joking with a guy I’ve spent over a decade with.”
