Commando: Absurdly Awesome

I mentioned it before that one of my favorite YouTube videos is the one the highlights all of the greatest Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes. They are just classic action film lines, which is one of the reasons why he is so remembered for his action flicks in the 80s. It wasn’t until now that I figured where many of them came from: “Commando.”

This film was basically Action Movies 101 with the badass John Matrix trying to live a normal life before some terrorists kidnap his daughter. And even though they are led by one of his old squadmates, these villains are foolish enough to try to blackmail him in order for their main boss to take control of a country. I mean this is exactly what you would expect from an 80s action movie.

Of course right away Matrix throws a wrench into their plan and takes down all the main bad guys in order to reach his daughter and this time really get out of the service. Throughout the film we get many memorable lines that I knew were coming but still left a similar impact. I won’t spoil it but a certain promise is made to a guy named Sully and it doesn’t get much better for him.

Now John Matrix is the ultimate soldier, in fact he is impossibly strong. He basically beats down everyone in a fight with relative ease, can pick up a phone booth and actually pushes a car off its side. Sure I knew Matrix would be exceedingly and unnaturally strong (I mean this is Arnold) but it bordered on idiotic.

And then, at the very end, he takes down like a hundred guys while basically shooting around. Matrix just fires away and guys go down. Of course since he’s so muscular he sticks out like a sore thumb so you would expect him to get shot a few times right? Nope. In fact he actually charges into a gunfight without a shirt on at points. Is it awesome? Yes but its effect lessens as the scene drags on.

Another issue I had was the main female character Cindy. She was just plain annoying which is unfortunate in an action movie where a lot is going on. She’s screaming as well as complaining throughout the movie, which led me to roll my eyes consistently. And then, all of the sudden, she sides with Matrix and the film tries to make you forget how irritating she has been. I mean the daughter is calmer than her.

Basically what it all comes down to is that “Commando” is a classic 80s action movie. It’s entertaining with the star at the time and his many memorable lines but really lacks depth. At the time I am sure it was awesome and there were times I thought it was too. By no means is it a bad film but one that certainly has its flaws.

But if you’ve never seen “Commando” and want to know what makes Arnold a legend then check it out. It will definitely keep you entertained with some of his best lines…and then you’ll move on. While better than “Conan the Barbarian,” it can’t reach levels of Arnold movies like “Total Recall.” But I mean how often do you see a man push a car down?
