After acquiring four players this morning as a result of the Rule V Draft, the San Diego Padres continued to shift their roster by trading prospects Casey Kelly and Ricardo Rodriguez to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for catcher Christian Bethancourt.
Bethancourt hit .200 with 2 HRs and 12 RBIs as the backup catcher for the Braves in 2015. He got more ABs in AAA, where he hit .327 with a slugging percentage of .480. At just 24 years old, the future is still very bright for Bethancourt.
This does cause a bit of a backlog for the Padres, who already have Derek Norris and Austin Hedges on the roster at catcher. This could be a move that leads to another move for Padres GM A.J. Preller, who has been active during this year’s Winter Meetings and is bound to continue being active in the weeks and months to come.
