Break up the 14-51 Lakers!! No seriously, break them up before they mess this up.
Panic in LA as the Lakers have won 2 straight. And that’s because right now every Laker win is really a loss. Because thanks to the Steve Nash trade back in 2012… If the Lakers don’t get a top 3 pick in the draft this year – they lose that pick all together. They get hosed on draft day, and Ben Simmons doesn’t need to hire a realtor in the Palisades.
That’s the nightmare. That you lose 65 games and have nothing to show for it. And it’s gettin’ reaaaaal dicey around Staples…that this could actually blow up in their face.
They shocked the world and blew out the Warriors. Then they chased it with a win over the Magic. And it’s not just the wins. It’s the look. D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson all got 20 points against Orlando.
Russell’s been so good he’s making a late run at rookie of the year. But don’t tell me – The Future is here!! No, the future is in Baton Rouge waiting to put on his draft day suit.
And meanwhile the Laker young ins are feeling so good, they’re gone and glossed themselves. Bad enough that that they beat the Splash Brothers, now Clarkson says he and Russell are “The Swag Brothers.”
I respect that the young players are feeling it, and they’re balling out. But they have a lot to learn about how the NBA works. This is not the time for swag, guys. In the NBA – the worst thing for a bad team is a good ending.
Tanking rules the league. This is not one of those moments where you rip off some wins, end on a good note and build for next year. Because doing that might wreck the next FIVE years.
And who do they play tonight? The Cavs. Oh great. Normally I’d say that’s the perfect team to blow them out. But with the Lakers going swag and LeBron going bag… That’s the last team Laker fans wants to see right now.
There’ll be a time for a couple of Swag Brothers. What the Lakers need right now is a band of “Draft Brothers.”
Right now it’s not about playing good basketball, it’s about getting lottery balls. That means losing. It starts tonight with LeBron. Do NOT strive for greatness, cuz!
