I hate this take. Because I can’t SHAKE this take. I have to do it every single year. An NFL prospect with a very bright future, makes a very dumb decision and fails a drug test or gets arrested before the NFL draft.
This year, the draft is in late April, and I couldn’t even make it to mid-March before calling out the latest name. DAK PRESCOTT…… COME ON DOWN! You’re the next dude to get arrested before you get drafted.
The former Mississippi State QB was arrested “early Saturday morning” and charged with driving under the influence. DAK! C’MON DAK! You’re better than that. At least you should have been.
Good dude, nice college career, but let’s be real- you’re not nearly a good enough player to get away with that. With all the questions about this guy’s ability to be a pocket passer, run an NFL offense… the best cards he had to play were his leadership and his character. Guys love him. Coaches love him.
Hours after he was arrested – guy was hosting a camp for 200 kids. The grade on Prescott- he may not blow you away on film, but he’s a great dude with a good head on his shoulders. Yeah, and booze in his dome and handcuffs on his wrist.
Guy was projected in the third or fourth round… and apparently tried to drive home after his 5th or 6th round.
Prescott made a statement, – I take responsibility for my actions, I’m going to show the true man I am blah blah. You just did, right Dak? Two things – I didn’t think it was possible, but in the era of Uber, when you’re one thumb click from a ride home, drunk driving has somehow gotten even dumber. And it’s such a terrible look for a quarterback in particular. A kick returner gets DUI’d? Oh well, check that 40 time. All we need him to do is catch the ball and take off. But a QB’s job is about DECISION MAKING, IQ, EVALUATING OPTIONS, SOLVING PROBLEMS.
And dropping back, doing shots, scanning the field and grabbing your car keys – is like putting 10 pick sixes on tape. Guy is 6 weeks from being able to pay for a personal driver every single night, and he can’t stay down. Better to fail every single combine test than even one field sobriety test.
Guys who show up to the Combine with weed in their system are laughing at a quarterback DUIing before the draft. I knew I was going to be forced to do this take this year, I just didn’t think it would be this guy. Same time next year. SMH.
