Breed: Holland Lop Rabbit
Age: 5 years old
Sex: Neutered Male
Organization: San Diego Companion Rabbit Society, 4807 Mercury St. in Kearny Mesa
Baxter is an adorable little 4-pound Holland Lop, relinquished to a shelter because he was too messy…spraying, marking his territory and not respecting the litter box. Of course, the simple fix for that was to neuter him, which the San Diego Companion Rabbit Society did right away. Now, what you see is a super friendly, active bunny who love his toys, flipping over cardboard boxes, then running in circles around his pen. He’s a good, healthy salad eater, too! Baxter would be best suited to an adult family or one with children who are at least 8 years of age because he’s not a fan of being picked up, and he’s a bit too squirmy to hold. Contrary to popular belief, bunnies make awful Easter presents for small children. They’re intelligent animals who need a lot of social interaction, and since they live 10-to-14 years, they obviously outlive childrens’ interest in them. Many serious bunny injuries occur as a result of children trying to play with them too roughly. Additionally, they are considered “exotic animals” by veterinarians, so vet care is much more expensive than that of your average dog or cat. If you’re thinking about adopting a rabbit as a long-term pet, then consider signing your whole family up for Bunny 101 classes at the Companion Rabbit Society shelter in Kearny Mesa. You may even want to consider volunteering as a family, or fostering a rabbit temporarily. Go to SanDiegoRabbits.org for more information!
