Hate him, hype him – Bryce Harper is backing it all up.
You can’t ding baseball for being a tired sport and then start the season all boring. You can’t rock a Make Baseball Fun Again lid if you’re not going to personally lead the crusade. And Harper has been leading it from the front.
And if you hated him before the season, and a I know many of you did; you probably want to fight the guy right now. Because look at what he’s done since showing up. He homered in the season opener. He homered in the home opener. He hit a grand slam for his 100th career homer. And yesterday he homered in his 4th straight game.
He’s already stolen half as many bags as he did in 2015, and he’s batting .359. Oh, and he’s the Majors’ leader in being called a D-Bag.
As the Washington City Paper points out- type Bryce Harper Dbag into Twitter – it will crash your browser. Then try doing it on a google and see what that gets you.
Remember this is the reigning MVP, not Dwight Howard or some sideshow character like Johnny Manziel, yet, apparently he’s the biggest Bag of all: things like, “Why Bryce Harper is the Dbag baseball needs.” “Bryce Harper just can’t stop being a DBag” “Bill Maher believes Bryce Harper is a DBag” “5 Reasons Bryce Harper is a DBag” “If you thought Bryce Harper was a Dbag before – Wait til you see this”
Listen – if you think that, I’m not telling you that you’re wrong. I’ve thought it myself at times. But I can’t right now. Because he’s killing it. He’s the best player in the game right now, and the best show in the sport. And hell yes he’s fun. The guy jacked a dinger all the way into the men’s room of the bullpen. So as Bags go, this one is entertaining as hell.
The second he put on that Make Baseball Fun Again hat- a lot of people wanted to call him a DBag again. But that guy is doing exactly what that lid says. Every day. Really, what’s a D-Bag? You can ask ten different people and get ten different answers. Me? I’ll just go to the definitive source: Our friends at the Urban Dictionary…and they define it as: “An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self-worth, compounded by a low level of intelligence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears.”
Looking at Harper right now- I don’t think any of that applies to him. I don’t always like the guy. But I like that he watches his home runs for a bit,… I can even hang with him rolling with a “100” sticker on his bat.
You may hate what he has to say – but damn it’s awesome watching this dude play ball. I’m not going to try to talk you out of your opinion of Bryce, but the way he’s swinging it, and carrying the torch for Team Bat Flip, if all you can say is, yeah, but he’s a d bag; I don’t care if he hits one off the moon, he’s still a d bag… that take is as bad as you think his act is. Give him this: you might not like what’s going out of his mouth, but at least he’s backing it all up. And then some.
