After injuries to Tyson Ross and Robbie Erlin, the San Diego Padres were in need of someone to start Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. It looks like they have found that person in Cesar Vargas.
The Padres signed Vargas to a minor-league deal this past offseason, after he spent six seasons as a part of the New York Yankees organization. He spent most of last year with the AA Trenton Thunder, going 6-0 with an ERA of 2.79 on the season.
In two starts for the San Antonio Missions this year, Vargas has pitched 12.2 innings with an ERA of 1.42.
Vargas was already on the Padres’ 40-man roster, so they’ll just need to send someone to the minors or the 15-day DL tomorrow to open up a spot for him on the 25-man roster before his start.
