Padres’ bullpen loses game, series to Cardinals

Despite getting strong performances by Andrew Cashner, Cesar Vargas, and Colin Rea in their three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Diego Padres lost two of three and the series due to a leaky bullpen.

On Saturday, the Padres bullpen gave up 10 earned runs in 4 innings of relief. On Sunday, they Padres bullpen gave up 5 earned runs in 4 innings on their way to a 8-5 loss. Unfortunately, several late rallies failed for the Padres, as they were unable to score a run in 4 innings against the Cardinals’ bullpen.

Contrary to earlier in the year, the Padres offense looked mostly solid against the Cardinals. Wil Myers, in particular, had a strong series. Myers hit .600 against the Cardinals, with an on-base percentage of .667. Overall, the team scored 11 runs over 3 games, scoring 4 runs and 5 runs in the first and third games of the series.

The San Diego Padres are now 7-12 on the season, and they’ll travel to San Francisco to take on the Giants tomorrow (7pm PT).
