On the final year of his deal, the last-place San Diego Padres were hoping to get value from Jon Jay at the trading deadline.

After trading Jedd Gyorko to the St. Louis Cardinals this offseason, the Padres got back Jon Jay, who has been fantastic so far in 2016. His .752 OPS is one of the best numbers he’s ever put up at the plate, and his defense in centerfield has ben stellar.

Oh, boy. With the MLB trading deadline being a month away (July 31st), and broken bones usually taking 6 weeks to fully heal, it would appear that the Padres won’t even be able to move Jay in return for a prospect.

Alex Dickerson is a corner outfielder, and Jon Jay has been the team’s starting centerfielder, so this could point to a position change for Melvin Upton Jr. or a promotion into the starting lineup for Travis Jankowski, who has been playing well in Jay’s place.
