San Diego Padres General Manager A.J. Preller has done a good job of getting maximum value via trades, getting back huge returns for Fernando Rodney and Drew Pomeranz (not to mention Craig Kimbrel) recently.
Now, with Andrew Cashner coming off an excellent start against the San Francisco Giants, it is rumored that he is about to do it again.
Cashner might be one of the best available arms on the market during this trading season, and he’s a free agent at the end of this year, but whether the team should move him before the August 1 MLB Trading Deadline is not a certainty.
Considering the team could possibly get back a high draft pick by holding onto him and extending the big Texan a qualifying offer in the offseason, like they did with Ian Kennedy this past offseason, you can expect that Preller is asking for another big return from whichever teams are interested in Cashner.
