Padres Sign Cuban OF Prospect Jorge Ona For $7M
As expected, the San Diego Padres have reportedly signed top Cuban prospect Jorge Ona one day after he was cleared as a free agent by Major League Baseball.

By those that have seen him, Ona has drawn comparisons to Yasiel Puig. At 6’2″ and 200 lbs at 19 years old, the young Cuban has shown the ability to hit for average and power, and has a plus-arm that could fit into right field at Petco Park one day.

Padres extend HR streak to 18, fall to Cards – MLB.com
Since he was traded in December, Jedd Gyorko has done nothing but rake against his former team, and his mastery of the Padres continued on Wednesday.

The Cardinals third baseman launched a pair of homers and drove in all three runs in a 3-2 victory over San Diego, as St. Louis completed a doubleheader sweep. Gyorko, who also homered in Game 1, has now gone deep in five straight games against the Padres — joining an elite group consisting of Barry Bonds, Chipper Jones, Sammy Sosa and Albert Pujols.

Toss SDSU’s hat into the Big 12 expansion ring – San Diego Union-Tribune
You won’t see the Aztecs on most lists, and they continued to decline comment about Big 12 expansion Wednesday. Don’t be deceived. Bowlsby and SDSU athletic director Jim Sterk have remained close since their days in the Pac-10 – Bowlsby at Stanford, Sterk at Washington State – and for the past few years the latter has quietly and actively lobbied the former, pitching the San Diego market, the Pacific time zone to expand national broadcast windows, the ascendant fortunes of SDSU football, the school’s rising academic profile, California’s fertile recruiting landscape, the enticing void created by a (possibly, probably) departing NFL team.
