BREAKING: Padres trade C Derek Norris to Nationals for pitching prospect

Derek Norris, who appeared in 272 games with the San Diego Padres over the last two season and was the team’s starting Catcher for most of that time, has been traded to the Washington Nationals:

There was some debate on whether or not the team would offer Norris arbitration, with the assumption being that he had lost his starting job to Austin Hedges and that Christian Bethancourt would be back as the team’s backup Catcher. Now, the decision will be up to the Washington Nationals.

In Pedro Avila, the Padres get back yet another young international pitching prospect. At the Single-A level last season, the 19-year old RHP started 20 games and finished the season with a 7-7 record and an ERA of 3.48. He’ll likely join a very talented rotation with the Lake Elsinore Storm in the upcoming season.

Almost as important, Padres GM A.J. Preller was able to pull off this trade despite being suspended at the tail end of last season. That’s a good sign, as the team heads into the MLB Winter Meetings, about other team’s willingness to trade with Preller.
