Mark Fabiani represents sharp teeth in a cancerous jaw that can’t even bite down any longer. Dean Spanos is pursuing an old reality that no longer exists within the sports community in San Diego.
The NEW REALITY is the SURGING POPULARITY of SOCCER which has the capacity to generate revenue for the City of San Diego like no other sport ever has.
You could have 20 SOCCER fields in Mission Valley and they would be filled with teams playing matches all day long all week long and at night as well if these fields were illuminated.
The popularity of SOCCER in San Diego far exceeds the popularity of football. It has been building up for years and is now roaring past football in total community popularity. SOCCER will soon DWARF American style football in the San Diego sports market.
This is the POTENT SITUATION San Diego now finds itself.
The tipping point has long since been reached.
When cities across the country WAKE UP to this NEW REALITY, they should design their stadiums accordingly.
The best multi-purpose stadiums will be the ones that configure their designs around the sport of SOCCER primarily and the sport of American style football secondarily.
The sport of SOCCER will fill these stadiums with enthusiastic fans more days each month and more months each year than football .
Rugby has a growing popularity in the U.S. as well.
Women’s sports must receive EQUAL ACCESS to these stadiums and this stipulation should open the floodgates of funding from corporate foundations designed to promote opportunities for women.
Natural turf is the only way to go and portable natural turf fields are the most innovative way to keep the fields outside the stadium in order to soak up maximum sunlight each day especially in winter.
The fields can be kept in tip top shape this way and rolled into the stadium a day or two before game day.
The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona is the OPERATIONAL MODEL cities should study and emulate.
But they should seriously consider having TWO portable natural turf fields instead of just one.
Women’s and men’s soccer teams could share one full width SOCCER field and a college and NFL team could share a football field.
San Diego has enough surplus real estate at their Qualcomm Stadium location to easily accommodate TWO FULL WIDTH SOCCER FIELDS and TWO football fields.
San Diego State games and high school CIF championship games could be played on one field and an NFL team could use the other football field on game day.
A women’s and a men’s professional SOCCER team can call San Diego home.
San Diego can be a host city for the men’s and women’s WORLD CUP.
San Diego can be a host city for Gold Cup Tournament games.
We don’t know the full extent of revenues from the sport of SOCCER alone, but they will be ASTRONOMICAL!!!!!!
