The San Diego Gulls are wrapping up the regular season and heading into the Calder Cup Playoffs in full wing, with the goal of bringing a championship to America’s Finest City! Gulls In Flight continues with a final weekend preview edition, as Craig Elsten and B.J. MacPherson join you from Friday morning skate at Valley View Casino Center with the latest on the Gulls as they head into the playoffs. Youth is being served on the ice through amateur tryouts; could we be seeing next year’s Gulls in a sneak preview with the skaters on the ice this weekend? Craig and B.J. discuss, along with some talk about the AHL regular season awards, the 2-3 playoff format and some early talk about the first round series with the Texas Stars.
Then, Craig is joined from the Gulls practice facility at Poway Ice by a Gulls newcomer, and a season-long contributor. First, we meet one of the newest additions to the San Diego hockey club, amateur tryout defenseman Andy Welinski. Fresh off a four-year college career at University of Minnesota-Duluth, Welinski stepped right into the Gulls lineup on an ATO contract, being paired with team captain Joe Piskula on the blue line. Next, it’s the “Ramblin’ Wreck from Quebec”, forward Antoine Laganiere. One of the team’s most reliable performers this season, Laganiere is in the heart of his pro career, striving for the NHL level while proving himself all over again in the American Hockey League.
