Corporal Mark C. Sopjes
– Biography –
Corporal Mark C. Sopjes is from Kalamazoo, MI. He graduated from Portage Central High School. Afterwards, He attended Western Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, as well as a Michigan Teaching Credential. While in College, Corporal Sopjes performed with the world renowned Drum and Bugle Corps, Phantom Regiment, which finished second place at DCI World Finals in 2006. Also while attending College, Corporal Sopjes free-lance taught marching band for several Michigan high schools. Most notably, Rockford High School, which placed 6th at MCBA state finals. Upon graduating Cum Laude from Western, in 2009, he accepted a position as Music Director for the Beuna Vista School District in Saginaw, MI for the 2009-2010 school year. The following school year, Corporal Sopjes accepted a position as Head Band Director for the Corunna School District. Under his direction the high school band received a Superior rating at MSBA marching and concert band festivals. After teaching music for two years, Corporal Sopjes enlisted in the Marine Corps in spring of 2011. He graduated boot camp on 6 January 2012, underwent Marine Combat Training, and attended the Navy School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA. Corporal Sopjes arrived at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in September 2012 and is currently serving as a Tuba instrumentalist in Marine Band San Diego.
Corporal Sopjes’ personal decorations include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Corporal Sopjes also received two letters of accommodation from various performances while at Marine Band San Diego.
