The San Diego Gulls returned to home ice after a 3-game roadtrip to take on their Pacific Divsion rival, the Ontario Reign. With the Gulls holding the second spot in the Pacific Division by only a point, Saturday’s game proved to be a pivotal game toward San Diego’s playoff push.
After falling behind 1-0 within the first two minutes of the game, the Gulls stormed back for a strong second half of the first period, and tallied four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission. With the Gulls dominating the first period, San Diego looked to keep the pressure on Ontario in the later moments of the game. However, Ontario stormed back in the middle frame, and scored 3 unanswered goals to cut the deficit to one with 20 minutes still to play. Despite a long 5 minute major power play, the Reign did complete the comeback and tied the game in the waning moments of the third period to force overtime. In overtime, Sam Carrick nearly ended the game on a breakaway, but the goal was reviewed and waved off. The game would go to a shootout, and Kevin Boyle made two key saves, while Justin Kloos iced the game giving San Diego a much needed 5-4 victory.
